Week 12 – Algorithmic control

BELOW IS THE TRANSCRIPT

In todays lecture we learnt about traces. We started off by understanding the history of traces such as signs and symbols left in historic places like Pompeii. Then we related this to our own understandings today and how these messages have transitioned onto the walls of Facebook. Data is generated continuously. Once content is produced and uploaded onto Facebook it becomes outlived by its generator.

This got me thinking…i can’t imagine how difficult it was to communicate and send messages back around 79 A.D. Last year I visited Pompeii and the following photos i took gave me an insight into how stories and information was told.

The information become sacred but wouldn’t last forever…Living now in 2019 the world is continually changing. Messages on a piece of stone has developed into a digital machine where data can be duplicated, changed and transferred to anyone in the world.

  1. I really liked how you alined this weeks lecture to your own experiences and included photos from your own visit to Pompeii. My blog post this week was super different to your one and I think it is really interesting how we all take away different things from the same lecture! I found looking into china and their surveillance systems which now have facial recognition really interesting – maybe have a watch of this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=lH2gMNrUuEY.
